31 Days: Weight Loss {Day 1: Die to Yourself}

{DAY 1} Die to Yourself

The first thing I did when I actually became serious about changing my life, my body, my health, my weight was to get rid of myself. Jesus said, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me,” Luke 9:23 ESV. I had to deny myself. I had to deny myself daily. I still do. I had to walk away from who I was and the way I felt about myself in order to get to who I was in Christ. In essence, I was standing in my way.

One of the practical ways I did that was to write down all the things I thought about my old self on a piece of paper and then I burned it. Literally. And, every time I start to think that way, I repeat this exercise. Next, I write down the things that Christ says I am, and I put it where I can readily find it: my fridge, my bathroom mirror, the top of my washing machine, on a note taped to my speedometer. Just make it happen.

As to never focus on the sin, I will not write the things I used to think about myself. If you battle with your weight, I am sure you have similar things rolling around in your mind. Let’s stop Satan right here and now. Instead, let’s focus on Christ. Here is a small list of what Christ says about us:

I am a child of God. John 1:12

I am a friend of Jesus. John 15:15

I have been justified and redeemed. Romans 3:24

My old self was crucified with Christ, and I am no longer a slave to sin. Romans 6:6

I will not be condemned by God. Romans 8:1

I have been set free from the law of sin and death. Romans 8:2

As a child of God, I am a fellow heir with Christ. Romans 8:17

I have been accepted by Christ. Romans 15:7

I have been called to be a saint. Corinthians 1:2, Ephesians 1:1

In Christ Jesus, I have wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption. 1 Corinthians 1:30

My body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who dwells in me. 1 Corinthians 6:19

And, of course, there are many more scriptures that tell us who we are in Christ. Need more? Go here.

Throughout this month, I will come back to this point of dying to yourself as I cover other points of weight loss. It is key. It is vital. You have to just walk away from the old you. Leave her and her old way of thinking behind. You will find that this small but completely vital decision will be your foundation with Christ in which you build your weight loss journey. You can conquer this, my friend. Just make one small decision at a time. Starting today, die to yourself.

Who does Christ say you are?

Love,

P31Wife

To God be all the glory.
